Job Opportunity

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

The Education Law Center, a non-profit legal advocacy organization whose mission is to ensure that Pennsylvania’s children have equal access to quality public schools, seeks an experienced development professional to lead its fundraising efforts.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will have the following responsibilities:

• Develop, manage and implement all fundraising programs and goals consistent with the priorities set by the Board of Directors and Executive Director, reporting regularly to both on progress.

• Build and manage a strong individual gifts program to attract both Annual Fund gifts as well as major multi-year gifts.

• Create and execute annual fund and other direct mail fundraising efforts.

• Develop and manage a strong cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship program for all current and prospective individual donors.

• Plan and execute fundraising and donor cultivation events.

• Oversee quality control of gift processing system and donor database; develop and manage gift acknowledgment protocol.

• Identify and research new revenue sources.

• Strengthen fundraising from corporations and foundations, including some research and grant proposal writing.

• Assist and advise the Board of Directors and its Fundraising/Development Committee members in their fundraising efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:

• At least five years of experience and a track record of success in a major nonprofit agency’s development program.

• Excellent writing, organizational, interpersonal and presentation skills.

• Knowledge of fundraising database programs, including Donor Perfect.

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or business preferred.

• Interest in education advocacy work preferable.

Salary commensurate with experience.

Fellowship and Internship Opportunities

  • Summer internships: We’re happy to receive applications from law students who are interested in interning at the Center, on a volunteer basis or with funding from their law schools, during the summer. The best time to contact us about summer internships is in the fall.
  • Fellowships: The Education Law Center seeks to sponsor applicants for postgraduate legal fellowships to start in September 2013. We are seeking applicants for the Skadden Fellowship, Equal Justice Works Fellowship, or other public interest fellowships. Fellows will have the option of working in either our Philadelphia or Pittsburgh offices. Applicants should be law students graduating in the spring of 2013 (current 2Ls) or current law clerks.

      ELC is a public interest law firm and education advocacy organization whose mission is to ensure that Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children have access to quality public schools. We focus on the needs of poor children, children of color, children in the foster care system, children with disabilities, English language learners, children in residential facilities, and others. Our strategies include litigation, legislative and policy advocacy, and community outreach and education.

  • Development Internships: We are interested in receiving applications for development internships for the school year or summer. Internships are unpaid. Development internships provide an opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of not-for-profit fundraising. The primary objective of this internship is to help grow the Education Law Center’s individual giving program with possible work on foundation funding, corporate giving, and fundraising compliance. Specific duties will depend on the applicant’s interests, skills, and experience. Applicants should contact Christine Gaffney.

Volunteering

  • Attorneys willing to do pro bono work for ELC are invited to fill out our attorney survey. ELC provides assistance to volunteer attorneys.
